IU In-Residence Week

March 14th, 2009 by The Elf · No Comments

IU Logo

Just came back from my 2nd Year MBA in-residence at Indiana University Kelley School of Business.  It was such a great experience meeting up with my cohorts, exchanging ideas, listening and conversing with the top-notch faculty and speakers, and of course partying (one of the many things that Bloomington is famous for).  I learned this new game called “Sink The Bismarck” at Nick’s Pub - hard to explain how it goes, but trust me, it’s a lot of fun.  We also found a Chinese food place called “Fortune Cookie” that was actually pretty good (especially the crispy duck)  Of course, the week wasn’t all fun and games - we actually had some school work accomplished, and also completed a finals exam that was given at the end of the week. All in all though, it was such a great week and has added immensely to my MBA experience.

Here are some pictures from the past week, or click here for a slideshow of all the pictures:

Best In Costume

February 8th, 2009 by The Elf · 1 Comment

Aileen and I attended the Fil-Am East Texas Valentine’s costume party last Saturday as “Edu Scissorhands” and “Goth Goddess”.  We were co-winners of Best In Costume, together with Maricar and Lawrence (as Lady Dracula and Mohawk Man).  See some selected pictures below, check all pictures out from the photo gallery, or see the slideshow.

Steelers Win!

February 2nd, 2009 by The Elf · No Comments

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers and their fans for winning a very exciting Super Bowl XLIII. We lived in Pittsburgh for about 3 years+, and we quickly became Steelers fans during our time there (at least I did).  Pittsburgh is a football town, and their love for their Steelers is almost a religion. That adulation is very infectious so you just can’t help but become a fan!

Most folks in East Texas are obviously Cowboys fans, but I do see the occasional Steelers shirt or jersey, proving that there are Steelers fans everywhere.  Today, I’m posting a picture of the family proclaiming our allegiance with the Black and Gold (taken during Rafa’s 2nd birthday party).

Here we go, Steelers, here we go!

WPG2

January 29th, 2009 by The Elf · 2 Comments

Hey blog, long time no see!  It’s like I don’t even know you anymore….

As you can see, it’s been almost 2 years since I’ve posted any entries.  Yes, I’ve been too lazy to post sometimes, but during the other times when I’m not being lethargic, there’s kids, work, studies, etc. to take care of.  Life just gets in the way of blogging!  But just because the blog has been empty doesn’t mean this website has been inactive - I actually update the photo gallery fairly often.  Usually at least once a month.   However, the frequency of my blog updates bothered me.  So one day, while browsing the web, I saw a WordPress widget called WPG2 that can simplify integration with Gallery2 (the software that runs my photo gallery).  That gave me an idea - so in an attempt to kill 2 birds with 1 stone,  I’ve decided to use the WPG2 plug-in to seamlessly integrate my gallery into this blog.  That way, the blog gets updated almost the same time as the gallery does… theoretically, at least.  Whether that will actually happen still remains to be seen.

The first thing that benefited from WPG2 is an entry about Rafa’s baptism that’s been stuck in blog limbo for almost a year and a half.  Check out that old blog post below (now given a fresh new life by being accompanied by pictures).  Some other changes you’ll see on the main blog page is found on the right.  There’s a random image that changes every time you load the page (it picks an image from a few thousand that exists in the gallery) , and also the 3 most recently added albums.  Clicking any of those images on the right takes you to it’s corresponding gallery page or album.  Cool, ‘no?

WPG2 rocks!  Maybe WPG2 has started a renewed relationship between me and my blog.

Matanda na sila, so The Youth pa din ba ang pangalan nila?

July 9th, 2007 by The Elf · 2 Comments

Hell yeah! May bagong kanta ang The Youth! One of my all-time Pinoy favorites is back from the dead. I found this on YouTube and wanted to share - here’s “Taong Grasa” by The Youth. Lagi ko pa din pinapatugtog ang “Album Na Walang Pamagat”… definitely the best album that came out of the Pinoy Alternative craze back in the mid-90s. Apparently, this new song came out early 2006. If anybody has news about them, please let me know. Salamat.

The day I set foot out of my house to leave the Ph…

October 30th, 2006 by The Elf · No Comments

The day I set foot out of my house to leave the Philippines and move to the States, I knew that this day would eventually come. It’s been 8 years since then, but it still doesn’t make it any less significant. Yes, I’m finally eligible to apply for US citizenship. What does that really mean though? Ibig ba sabihin non puputi na ako? Does it mean that I’m turning my back on the Philippines? The subject of immigration by Pinoys has been beaten to death by a lot of Pinoy bloggers (including an excellent post on it by the great Jim Paredes on his site), but for me, it is simply a formality. I’ve lived in the States for about 8-9 now, and I don’t have any plans of leaving, so why not reap the benefits of being a citizen? I’ll have a blue passport, have social security benefits (or what will be left of it when it comes time for me and Aileen to retire), and be able to petition my relatives from the Philippines to live here.

I’ll always love the Philippines, and will always be proud of being Pinoy. Becoming a US citizen doesn’t change that. I don’t even have to renounce being a Filipino citizen. As they say, there’s no place like home, and I feel that I will always consider the Philippines my home.
