The NBA Playoffs

So the NBA regular season is finally over… thank God because it was getting real boring. The Sixers are the sixth seed in the playoffs, actually a lot better than I thought they would do. Considering that Allen Iverson was out for the last 15 or so games, it’s amazing they even made it. I’d like for the Sixers to come back to the NBA Finals, but I don’t think they’ll be able to pull it off this time around. Even with the addition of Derrick Coleman, the team just doesn’t have the same desire that they had last year. Add that with the injury troubles they’ve had and it all but seems impossible. And they’re going against the duo of Walker and Pierce and the rest of the Boston Celtics in the first round, probably one of the best teams in the East. They need Iverson if they at least want to go further than that.

For my money, I think the NJ Nets are a cinch to win the Eastern Conference this year.

The Western Conference is a different story altogether. Any one of the top 5 teams can beat the whole Eastern Conference on any given day. It’s no doubt that unless there’s a shift of power, for the next five years or so we’ll be having a champ coming from there.

The Lakers are still the team to beat, but Portland is an unpredictable team. Their last meeting during the regular season proved that the Lakers are still mortal and do have their weaknesses. I never really like Shaq and Kobe, mostly due to their arrogance, and it would be great if they get bumped off in the first round!

My favorite teams in the playoffs this year though have to be the Dallas Mavericks and the Sacramento Kings. These two teams are brimming to the seams with talent, plus they’re very exciting to watch. Any player in their starting roster can explode on any given night, and even their benches are laden with excellent players. One thing that Sacramento has to work on though is motivating Chris Webber to drive inside, especially during crunch time. He has a tendency to just settle for a jump shot in the last moments of close games, and that’s just not going to cut it. The smart money will be on the Lakers, but I’ll be rooting for the Kings and the Mavs all the way!

My first round predictions:

East matchups

– With Iverson, Sixers over the Celtics in 5 games, without him, its going to be a sweep by Boston

– New Jersey defeats the Pacers in 4

– The Pistons bow to the Raptors in 5 (I think the Raptors have a lot of heart, even without half-man, half-amazing Vince Carter)

– The Hornets overpowers the Magic in 3 (experience-wise, the Hornets definitely have an edge…. never mind their standings)

West matchups (no suprises here, really)

– Kings over the Jazz in 5 games

– Mavs over the Timberwolves in 3

– Lakers defeats the Blazers in 4

– Spurs conquers the Sonics in 4

Anyway, this year’s NBA playoffs are going to be fun to watch!
